Do you have current vehicle insurance and you’re looking to switch your provider? Or are you new to car insurance and you don’t know why it can be so expensive or what kind of coverage options you really have to choose from? Shopping for cheap car insurance can be confusing and there are a lot of options available. The trouble is, they may mostly just be offering you the exact same products for roughly the same cost so how do you know that you’re actually getting the cheapest car insurance in Australia without sacrificing good perks and benefits?
Let’s start with the types of car insurance you can actually purchase and what each policy actually covers you for. You may decide that the level of cover you actually have isn’t good enough or is a little too comprehensive for what you actually need. Let us help you understand the types of insurance that is available to you and how you may make the most out of your policy.
Comprehensive car insurance: Comprehensive cover for your vehicle means that you are insured against damage that you cause and for damage that is caused by other vehicles, people or events. This level of cover is the highest kind of insurance cover available. It protects you financially from the cost of accidental damage that either you cause to your own vehicle, someone else causes to your own vehicle, or for weather events like hail damage. If you are at fault and you wish to claim on your insurance policy to cover the cost of accidental damage, then you will need to pay what is known as an excess. The excess amount will vary depending on the type of policy you have and who it’s with. Some insurance providers have developed ways to keep annual premiums more affordable by dropping the premium amount and increasing the excess. Alternatively, you can often decrease your excess amount by opting to pay a higher annual premium. This may be particularly useful for younger drivers who may already have a substantially higher annual premium they must pay given the high risk of their demographic.
Often when you take out finance like a car loan, or you use your car as an asset to secure a personal loan, you may be forced to take out a comprehensive insurance policy protecting the finance company against the loss of your security asset.
CTP insurance: Compulsory Third Parry insurance is also known as a green slip and you cannot register your vehicle in any state and territory in Australia without one. Again, younger drivers may be stung here more than older drivers with the cost of CTP insurance being substantially higher for drivers who are more likely to need to claim this type of insurance. In NSW you are permitted to purchase your green slip from any insurance provider who offers them but in other parts of the country including the ACT, WA, QLD and VIC, your options are more limited. However, they are also subsided by the state and territory government which mandates the need for them. This type of insurance is to help cover costs you may cause to an individual such as medical costs. You are not permitted to drive a vehicle that does not have a current CTP insurance policy and the fines for doing so are incredibly steep.
Third Party Fire and Theft: This kind of insurance works similarly to a comprehensive policy except it does not cover damage that you cause to your own vehicle. Given that the level of coverage is restricted only to property you damage that does not belong to you, may be a cheap car insurance option particularly for people with older cars. Often if your vehicle is quite aged, and not considered a specialist vehicle or vintage antique, the cost to comprehensively insure your car may be higher than the actual market value of the vehicle itself. With a Fire and Theft policy, your vehicle is covered in the event that it is stolen. The excess will need to be paid in this case and often the insurance provider will calculate your insurance payout minus the value of the excess so you’re not immediately out of pocket.
All of these insurance policies are offered to individuals using standard risk assessments that model historical claims data to develop the price of a premium and the likelihood of an insurance company needing to payout against a policy. At Ubicar, we do that too but we also use a special and high-tech approach to actively monitoring the fairness of an individual’s insurance policy. When you take out car insurance from Ubicar we have an app that actually captures your driving data in real-time and we use that data to continue assessing your premium price. For safe drivers, you are rewarded with a safety rating and potentially lower annual premiums. The price of your insurance is not dependent upon the conduct of other drivers who share your post code but is instead driven by your own abilities, experience and caution on the road. You can’t get fairer than that.
Our types of insurance include rideshare insurance for people who work for companies like Uber, and we also insure specialist and new vehicles like the Tesla. As a new phenomenon in Australian motoring, there is not a lot of insurance data that exists to accurately reflect the value of insuring a Tesla. We’re using your own driving capabilities and caution to help us deliver a potentially fair premium that is individualised and personalised to the way you drive.
Choosing Ubicar takes about a few minutes of your time to set up entirely online. There are no lengthy paperwork delays and we can get you up and covered as soon as you accept your quote and your premium is paid. We also don’t charge you fees on choosing to pay your premium by the month as opposed to one lump sum. Our optional extras include 365 day a year roadside assistance that you can add to your policy for additional peace of mind.
Ubicar is not just about potentially cheap car insurance, we’re about fair premiums and insurance rewards. You know what kind of driver you are, and you know what the chances of you causing an accident are. We trust you to know that so when you join Ubicar you’re invited to prove to us how safe a driver you are and how much you can improve your insurance premium with us.
