Most frequently asked questions and answers.
How does Pay per kilometre Insurance work? You simply pay insurance for the number of kilometres you drive each month plus a low base premium for when your car is not being used.
At the end of the month we multiply the kilometres driven for that month by the rate per km. We add that to your monthly base premium and that’s the total you pay. No need to worry if you’re going on a road trip, we cap the daily km charge at 100km so you can rest assured your costs stay affordable.
Who is UbiCar?UbiCar is here to disrupt the Australian insurance industry by giving drivers a fairer premium based on HOW they drive, not simply based on their demographics. The UbiCar app is free to use, and tracks your driving using telematics, so we can give you a driver score. UbiCar safe drivers can make substantial savings on their car insurance premiums based on their driver score. We are 100% Australian Company, and proud of it!
UbiCar Insurance was founded to use technology to take the guess work out of insurance, and provide Australian drivers with substantial savings on their insurance. UbiCar is backed by RAC Insurance who has been the trusted insurer of West Australians for over 70 years. Company details are: UbiCar Insurance Pty Ltd (ABN 83 601 223 858; AFSL 469073) policies are underwritten by RAC Insurance Pty Limited (ABN 59 094 685 882; AFSL 231222).
How is my driving score calculated?Your driving score reflects how safe a driver you are, ranging from 40 to 100. The higher the score, the safer the driver! The primary elements of driving behaviour that go into these calculations are your speed, harsh braking and acceleration, cornering, and mobile phone distraction. Your driving behaviour is monitored across a variety of trips to give you an average score. You can monitor your scores through your free UbiCar App.
How does How You Drive insurance work? The UbiCar app tracks your driving (think braking, cornering, phone distraction, acceleration and speeding) and uses that information to give you a driver score and calculate your premium. The better driver you are, the better your premium will be. The UbiCar App is free in the app stores.
Can you guarantee the lowest price?UbiCar is not for everyone. You may find you can get cheaper insurance elsewhere, and we’d encourage you to find the best price together with features and benefits for your car insurance.
How is my PPK premium calculated?Your premium will vary monthly depending on how many kilometres you drive. We consider other factors as well when calculating your base premium and rate per km. This includes things such as your car’s agreed value, the make and model of your car and where you keep your car overnight. The base rate covers your car whilst you are not driving.
How is UbiCar different from other insurers? If you drive well, you are less likely have an accident, so it makes sense that you should pay less for your insurance – that’s fair and that’s what UbiCar aims to deliver. We’re making sure that premiums for car insurance are fair one policy at a time.
We believe in fair priced insurance for everyone and are using technology to deliver lower cost car insurance.
How does UbiCar measure how many kilometres I’ve travelled? When you sign up for a Pay per km policy you are sent an UbiCar Device which takes a reading of your odometer. We use that number of kilometres to calculate your premium each month and whenever you change or cancel your policy.
How do I lodge a complaints? We want you to feel like you’re being looked after every time you deal with us. But if you don’t feel we’ve handled something properly, send us an email at insurance@ubicar.com.au or call us on 1300 UBICAR (1300 824 227) and we’ll sort it out for you. Cheap Car Insurance in Australia
Cheap car insurance in Australia is something that everybody wants and Ubicar have developed an innovative and high-tech solution for usage-based premiums, options and extras high, and remaining as fair as possible for all kinds of drivers including learner drivers and young drivers under 21 and under 25 through to Uber drivers and other rideshare professionals. We’re changing the way Australians think about and operate within the car insurance market by using the technological advances and options that each of us already use every day. Your smart device and its ability to run our app is what will ensure that you access potentially cheap car insurance in Australia from Ubicar. It’s why your premium will be personalised to you, specifically, in a previously unknown way.
Do you have current vehicle insurance and you’re looking to switch your provider? Or are you new to car insurance and you don’t know why it can be so expensive or what kind of coverage options you really have to choose from? Shopping for cheap car insurance can be confusing and there are a lot of options available. The trouble is, they may mostly just be offering you the exact same products for roughly the same cost so how do you know that you’re actually getting the cheapest car insurance in Australia without sacrificing good perks and benefits?
Let’s start with the types of car insurance you can actually purchase and what each policy actually covers you for. You may decide that the level of cover you actually have isn’t good enough or is a little too comprehensive for what you actually need. Let us help you understand the types of insurance that is available to you and how you may make the most out of your policy.
Comprehensive car insurance: Comprehensive cover for your vehicle means that you are insured against damage that you cause and for damage that is caused by other vehicles, people or events. This level of cover is the highest kind of insurance cover available. It protects you financially from the cost of accidental damage that either you cause to your own vehicle, someone else causes to your own vehicle, or for weather events like hail damage. If you are at fault and you wish to claim on your insurance policy to cover the cost of accidental damage, then you will need to pay what is known as an excess. The excess amount will vary depending on the type of policy you have and who it’s with. Some insurance providers have developed ways to keep annual premiums more affordable by dropping the premium amount and increasing the excess. Alternatively, you can often decrease your excess amount by opting to pay a higher annual premium. This may be particularly useful for younger drivers who may already have a substantially higher annual premium they must pay given the high risk of their demographic.
Often when you take out finance like a car loan, or you use your car as an asset to secure a personal loan, you may be forced to take out a comprehensive insurance policy protecting the finance company against the loss of your security asset.
CTP insurance: Compulsory Third Parry insurance is also known as a green slip and you cannot register your vehicle in any state and territory in Australia without one. Again, younger drivers may be stung here more than older drivers with the cost of CTP insurance being substantially higher for drivers who are more likely to need to claim this type of insurance. In NSW you are permitted to purchase your green slip from any insurance provider who offers them but in other parts of the country including the ACT, WA, QLD and VIC, your options are more limited. However, they are also subsided by the state and territory government which mandates the need for them. This type of insurance is to help cover costs you may cause to an individual such as medical costs. You are not permitted to drive a vehicle that does not have a current CTP insurance policy and the fines for doing so are incredibly steep.
Third Party Fire and Theft: This kind of insurance works similarly to a comprehensive policy except it does not cover damage that you cause to your own vehicle. Given that the level of coverage is restricted only to property you damage that does not belong to you, may be a cheap car insurance option particularly for people with older cars. Often if your vehicle is quite aged, and not considered a specialist vehicle or vintage antique, the cost to comprehensively insure your car may be higher than the actual market value of the vehicle itself. With a Fire and Theft policy, your vehicle is covered in the event that it is stolen. The excess will need to be paid in this case and often the insurance provider will calculate your insurance payout minus the value of the excess so you’re not immediately out of pocket.
All of these insurance policies are offered to individuals using standard risk assessments that model historical claims data to develop the price of a premium and the likelihood of an insurance company needing to payout against a policy. At Ubicar, we do that too but we also use a special and high-tech approach to actively monitoring the fairness of an individual’s insurance policy. When you take out car insurance from Ubicar we have an app that actually captures your driving data in real-time and we use that data to continue assessing your premium price. For safe drivers, you are rewarded with a safety rating and potentially lower annual premiums. The price of your insurance is not dependent upon the conduct of other drivers who share your post code but is instead driven by your own abilities, experience and caution on the road. You can’t get fairer than that.
Our types of insurance include rideshare insurance for people who work for companies like Uber, and we also insure specialist and new vehicles like the Tesla. As a new phenomenon in Australian motoring, there is not a lot of insurance data that exists to accurately reflect the value of insuring a Tesla. We’re using your own driving capabilities and caution to help us deliver a potentially fair premium that is individualised and personalised to the way you drive.
Choosing Ubicar takes about a few minutes of your time to set up entirely online. There are no lengthy paperwork delays and we can get you up and covered as soon as you accept your quote and your premium is paid. We also don’t charge you fees on choosing to pay your premium by the month as opposed to one lump sum. Our optional extras include 365 day a year roadside assistance that you can add to your policy for additional peace of mind.
Ubicar is not just about potentially cheap car insurance, we’re about fair premiums and insurance rewards. You know what kind of driver you are, and you know what the chances of you causing an accident are. We trust you to know that so when you join Ubicar you’re invited to prove to us how safe a driver you are and how much you can improve your insurance premium with us.
