The UbiCar app tracks your driving (think braking, cornering, phone distraction, acceleration and speeding) and uses that information to give you a driver score and calculate your premium. The better driver you are, the better your premium will be. The UbiCar App is free in the app stores.
Your driving score reflects how safe a driver you are, ranging from 40 to 100. The higher the score, the safer the driver! The primary elements of driving behaviour that go into these calculations are your speed, harsh braking and acceleration, cornering, and mobile phone distraction. Your driving behaviour is monitored across a variety of trips to give you an average score. You can monitor your scores through your free UbiCar App.
You simply pay insurance for the number of kilometres you drive each month plus a low base premium for when your car is not being used.
At the end of the month we multiply the kilometres driven for that month by the rate per km. We add that to your monthly base premium and that’s the total you pay. No need to worry if you’re going on a road trip, we cap the daily km charge at 100km so you can rest assured your costs stay affordable.
Your premium will vary monthly depending on how many kilometres you drive. We consider other factors as well when calculating your base premium and rate per km. This includes things such as your car’s agreed value, the make and model of your car and where you keep your car overnight. The base rate covers your car whilst you are not driving.
When you sign up for a Pay per km policy you are sent an UbiCar Device which takes a reading of your odometer. We use that number of kilometres to calculate your premium each month and whenever you change or cancel your policy.
UbiCar is not for everyone. You may find you can get cheaper insurance elsewhere, and we’d encourage you to find the best price together with features and benefits for your car insurance.

What is an Excess in Car Insurance?
UbiCar does insurance a little differently, offering access to a range of vehicle insurance policies from policies for over 50 insurance holders to rideshare drivers like Uber drivers. At UbiCar, you can choose two types of policies that could save you money: pay per kilometre or pay as you drive insurance and pay how you drive policies. The first policy is usage based insurance, offering you a monthly premium based on how often you’re out on the road and driving. The second is a little different, offering you adjusted premiums based on how you drive. This policy comes with the UbiCar App designed to measure things like braking, speeds and cornering while you’re driving. If you’re a safe and responsible road user then your App will show that, helping you to access cheaper premiums. We’re about rewarding Australian drivers for their good driving choices.
What is an excess payment?
An excess payment is a lump sum payment the insurance customer pays to their insurance provider when they need to claim on their policy. Depending on the circumstances, this could be because they were at-fault in a vehicle accident or because the driver was not able to identify the at-fault driver.When do you pay excess on car insurance?
Your agreed excess value on your insurance policy is payable when you need to make a claim on your policy. T Excess is usually only payable for your losses and so is only applicable when you make a claim on your policy for an accident that was your fault or when the at-fault party is unable to identified. For example, if you return to your parked vehicle to discover that someone has hit your vehicle but there is no way of identifying who then you will need to pay your excess amount if you should choose to use your insurance policy to cover the cost of your repairs. You pay your excess amount at the time of your claim which gets your claim started and the repairs on your vehicle (or the replacement of your vehicle) started too.
How does excess work on car insurance?
Excess is the insurance customer’s contribution to repairs or the replacement of your vehicle. For example, say you have sustained damage to your vehicle that your repairer has said will cost $2,000 to repair. Your contribution to that is the excess amount – as agreed on your policy – and the rest is paid by your insurance provider.
When you have an accident or need to seek repairs or the replacement of your vehicle, the first thing to do is start your claim. You can do this with UbiCar via our website, inputting all of your relevant details using our online form. A representative will be in touch with you within 24 hours to finalise your claim. Do I have to pay the excess if it is not my fault?
Generally, if the at-fault individual can be identified then they must foot the bill for repairs of replacement of your vehicle. However, it doesn’t always work like that so sometimes, even if the damage to your vehicle was not your fault, you may need to pay your excess amount to start your claim. If you have experienced an accident on the road and it wasn’t your fault, it’s best to get the at-fault driver’s licence details and the details of their insurance policy, such as their insurance provider and their policy number. This helps an insurance company talk to other providers more easily and more quickly, expediting your claim and getting your vehicle fixed sooner rather than later.
What does it mean if your insurance policy has an excess?
Excess amounts can vary between providers and between policies. Drivers can access cheap car insurance when they opt for larger excess payments, choosing to bear more of the risk of their own driving while they’re out on the road to help lower their yearly premiums. Other excesses may be included on your policy, depending on the type of accident or who was driving your vehicle at the time. These can include your policy’s standard excess amount, age excess amounts for young drivers or drivers under 26, unlisted driver excess (when a driver not listed on your policy was behind the wheel), inexperienced driver excess such as learner drivers, windscreen excess to cover the cost of repairs of replacement of your windscreen, etc.
